So you’re ready to start outfitting the baby’s nursery and you’re probably asking yourself some basic questions like how much should I spend on nursery items, how much space do I need, and should my nursery have a theme? These are personal choices and there are no right or wrong answers. But we can offer some universal advice about nursery design, based on our many years of helping new parents select the right nursery items for their needs.

The nursery should be a calm retreat for both infant and parent. Make it peaceful and comfortable. We recommend incorporating a cozy rocker or glider chair for feeding, snuggling, and reading. If space allows, a daybed is a welcome addition for times when you want to stay close by for longer.

The diaper changing station will only be needed for the first couple of years. So it’s best to use a well-made dresser with a removable changing tray on top. Your changing area should be organized so that all the essentials – diapers, wipes and creams -- are within easy reach.

The crib should always be visible from the entry of the nursery, so you have a clear view of the baby. Don’t hang anything directly above the crib or attach anything to the crib that could become a hazard.

Never use a second-hand crib unless you know when it was made and if it’s been properly cared for. Cribs sold in the U.S. must conform to established safety standards regarding dimensions and structural integrity. But those standards have evolved over time. A crib that was produced just 10 years ago may not meet the latest requirements. Any crib can be compromised by improper handling. So it’s always best to start with a new crib.

Standard cribs and crib mattresses vary little in shape and size. Non-standard cribs are permitted, but only if they’re sold with a properly-fitting crib mattress. Even within this narrow criteria, there are lots of variations in crib design and materials. Always look for a sturdy crib from a reputable manufacturer. We recommend nursery furniture and mattresses produced in North America or Europe using sustainable, non-toxic materials and fair labor practices.

When you’re putting together a nursery, you’re working against a time clock. Custom made furniture offers a greater choice of finishes and fabrics, but takes longer to deliver. So get started early!
